Bursaries: The Gift of Opportunity

The provision of bursaries has been a core priority of Merchant Taylors’ School since its founding, with the belief that access to academic excellence should not be restricted by financial circumstance.

With the rising economic challenges, bursaries are in higher demand than ever before, and thanks to the incredible generosity of our benefactors, we have been able to award 71 entrance and hardship bursaries in 2025, allowing each of these boys to take full advantage of the opportunities MTS has to offer for the full duration of their education at the School.

The true impact of bursaries like this is immeasurable and is certainly not confined to the classroom. As the Head Master mentioned in his video, the achievements of each of these boys ranges from extraordinary academic and exam success through to virtuosic musicianship or incredible sporting accolades. The opportunities which come along with being a member of the Merchant Taylors’ School community make a transformational difference to the lives of every boy who receives a bursary.

You can read more about some of our bursary recipients, here.

Clubs and Societies Update

The Clubs and Societies Fund, supported by gifts made to the Head Master’s Discretionary Fund has enriched the activities of a variety of extra-curricular clubs and societies throughout the School this year.

At the beginning of the Spring Term, students were given the opportunity to submit a proposal on behalf of a club or society they participate in for funding to expand their activities through either new equipment, additional experiences, or any other project initiatives which would be valuable for the club.

Over £21,000 was awarded in 2025 which assisted well-established clubs such as the Chess Club with training sessions with a Grandmaster, and Code club with the provisions to establish the first inter-school Hackathon hosted here at MTS. The fund also helped provide the equipment needed to set up some new clubs, such as a flight simulator for the budding pilots in Aviation Club, and medical grade supplies for Medicine and Dentistry Society.

You can read a full write up of every club and society that was supported, here.

The Transformational Effect of Legacies

The most impactful gifts are the long-lasting ones, and thanks to the generous members of the 1561 Foundation, who have left a legacy gift to MTS in their will, we are able to ensure that bursaries will be available to support boys to attend the School in perpetuity.

You can find out more about leaving a legacy to the school and the tax benefits of leaving a gift to charities in your will here. If you would like to discuss your plans in more detail, please contact Nick Latham on njl@mtsn.org.uk or call his direct line 01923 845 589.

Celebrating our volunteers

Volunteering is such an integral part of Merchant Taylors' School, and we are incredibly grateful to every member of our community who has given their time and resources to assist us over the last year.

During a recent Benefactors’ event, the Head Master said the following about our volunteers in careers:

“Our careers programme is a great example of something that the School can be really proud of, but which simply couldn’t exist at the level is does without your support. It is only as good as the quality, and the breadth of experience, of the volunteers who come back and guide our boys. Thank you to our volunteers.”

The support you have been able to give us, whether that is through serving on a committee, helping out with an event, assisting in the archive, or sharing your experiences and offering advice and support to our pupils is truly invaluable, and we are so thankful for your contributions which have enriched the activities on offer for our students this year. Thank you.
