Golf - Captain's Report
I took over the captaincy from Guy Hearn at the Summer Meeting, played at Thorpeness in July. Guy had a tremendously successful stint as Captain, topped by winning The Grafton Morrish in October 2013. He will be a tough act to follow - well done Guy.
Just before I took over, The Cyril Gray Tournament, where Roger Howard is President, was played at Worplesdon. Players have to have reached the milestone age of 50 to qualify and there is a team of 6 for each of the 32 schools attending. Our team is captained by Mike Grimsdick who again does a great job. We reached the semi-finals only to be beaten by Whitgift, who fielded two international players.
After the Summer Meeting, we played another seven matches against Old Boys where honours were about even. We retained the prestigious Lowe Trophy against St Paul's. The annual match against The Merchant Taylors' Company at The Berkshire is always a highlight (especially the lunch) and we squeezed a win against a jolly side captained by Peter Watkins who is now Master of the Livery Company.
The Autumn Meeting held at Denham was well attended by members and guests. The scratch prize for the day and indeed for the cumulative Meetings of Spring, Summer and Autumn was won by Richard Cawdron.
During October, both The Grafton Morrish and Cricketer Cup Golf Tournaments were played and you can read the individual reports on those from the respective team captains, David Simpson and Johnnie Hampel.
Our Hon. Sec. Mike Singer has just undergone a hip replacement and is recovering well. He is owed a lot of thanks for all his work behind the scenes and I look forward to seeing him on the golf course in the early part of 2015.
For those that are not members of the Society and play golf, please do come and join us - it's really quite good fun, you know!
