OMT Society Annual Dinner
On 21st November 2014, the annual OMT Society Dinner returned to Merchant Taylors’ Hall after two years elsewhere. There was an extraordinary turnout with the venue close to capacity, which was the first time in living memory. With the record attendance having previously been set at Lord’s in 2009, the 2014 event decimated the previous level with a record breaking 246 attendees, of which over 60% were under the age of 30.
Speeches from Master of the Company Peter Watkins OMT, Head Master Simon Everson, and Society President Tony Wright discussed the healthy state of the School and the Society, with the former excelling once again: outstanding exam results are an aspect of the School which have been so consistently good for so many years that they are beginning to be unremarkable; fantastic School musical and dramatic productions similarly represent the wonderful work which the boys and teachers alike contribute and are clearly a great strength; and finally sporting achievement amongst the boys continues to soar, with an ever-increasing number playing representational sport for county and country, all of these achievements are testament to the rude good health of the School.
Beyond the obvious mention of the fantastic food and company on offer, the particular highlight of the evening was the rousing support which the School Song received from all corners of the room. The event undeniably goes from strength to strength: with almost 250 people in attendance an ever-growing proportion is represented by more recent School leavers - evidence of an increasingly enthusiastic membership of the Society and a great source of encouragement for the future thereof.
Max Weitzmann’s fantastic organisation and planning contributed invaluably to the success of the event and everyone can already start looking to next year’s festivities at the Globe Theatre Exhibition.
