OMTs on University Challenge
We offer our warmest congratulations to Anthony Martinelli (OMT, 2008) who has captained Gonville and Caius, Cambridge to victory in the most recent series of University Challenge. The Gonville and Caius team beat Magdalen College, Oxford, 255-105 in the final. Anthony excelled as a biologist when at Taylors’, representing Great Britain in the International Biology Olympiad in Mumbai where he picked up a silver medal. After winning University Challenge, Anthony was interviewed on Radio 4 as well as on various other media outlets. “The whole experience was fantastic. I found it funny that the last question of the whole competition was on botany - the only reason I have any knowledge of the suffix -aceae is an afternoon spent at Kew Gardens training for the Biology Olympiad.”
Former Taylors’ Head of Biology, Neil Richards taught Anthony. He remembers him well: “I taught Anthony throughout his career at Merchant Taylors’ School and he was probably the best A level student I have ever encountered. He not only knew what was required by the specification but displayed a wide interest around the topics and was widely read.” We are all delighted to hear of Anthony’s success and wish him well as he now begins his career in medicine.
You may want to support Nicholas Bennett (OMT 2013) who will represent Sidney Sussex in the next series of university challenge. We wish him, and all our other OMT contestants, the very best of luck!
