Summer Serenade
This year’s Summer Serenade took place outside in the Inner Quad, for the first time in a good few years.
As ever, the programme was a varied mixture of vocal and instrumental music performed by orchestras, bands and choirs. It included the Theme from ‘Superman’ played by the Concert Band, ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’ performed by the Dixieland Band, and some upbeat numbers from the choir, including the theme from ‘The Sound of Music’, which will be taken on tour to Austria.
The Wind Band and Sinfonia both featured, before combining to perform ‘Let it Go’, from the Disney motion picture ‘Frozen’, in what was a great collaboration between the two ensembles. With bow ties on, the entire Third Form sang two lively songs – a Medley of ‘When The Saints’ and ‘This Train’, as well as ‘Believe’ by Lin Marsh. Fresh from their performance at the Jazz Night, the Swing Band also excited the audience, with their renditions of ‘Get it On’ and ‘Skyliner’.
As always, there was an item by the Upper Sixth Form leavers, who this year ended their musical careers at MTS with an arrangement of ‘Hit the Road Jack’, organised by Michael Colman. Despite the windy conditions, the Chamber Orchestra later expertly delivered music from the ‘Capriol Suite’ by Warlock, before the Senior Orchestra performed the ‘Knightsbridge March’ from the London Suite. The evening concluded with the Serenade Singers, comprised of the school choir and Parents’ choir, who sang ‘Fascinating Rhythm’, the theme from ‘The Sound of Music’ and ‘Mack the Knife’. Following this, in true British style (it had been a chilly summer’s night after all) the evening ended with a rousing rendition of ‘Rule Britannia’, led by Upper Sixth former James Murphy.
Spectacular fireworks then concluded the evening, and music week as a whole.
