SHINE
‘Serious Fun on Saturdays’ (SHINE) is in its third year at MTS. It is a 12-week community project run by the charity SHINE and Merchant Taylors’ School, which involves 20 local primary pupils from Warren Dell, Oxhey Wood, Woodhall and Greenfields primary schools. This year the students have benefited from sessions on a wide range of subjects including astronomy, recycled art, dissections, sustainability, Japanese, drama, and Geography. The MTS boys have largely planned the sessions supported by Taylors’ and St Helen’s teachers. Girls from St Helen’s volunteered to assist the sessions, too.
On Saturday 16th May, MTS hosted the SHINE graduation, which included a delicious brunch provided by the catering department and an awards ceremony coordinated by Deji Arole and Scott Lewis. The primary school pupils and their parents attended the ceremony as well as the student volunteers from Taylors’ and St Helen’s, Miss Vanstone, Mrs Shockley and Mrs Sinclair (St Helen’s). Many thanks to all boys and girls who volunteered from MTS and St Helen’s, and also to the teachers who supported them. The primary school children enjoyed the 10-week scheme immensely and developed both academically and in terms of confidence.
