Royal Festival Hall
On Tuesday 31st March, four Merchant Taylors' boys (Rafi Kelion, Aaron Rozanski, Matthew Cooper and Xavier Stavrou-Long) performed as part of an elite symphony orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall. The ensemble comprised around 100 instrumentalists from some of the country’s top 25 schools (including Harrow, Wellington, Oundle and many more), and is sponsored by the Duet Group (an instrument hire company). The repertoire included Richard Strauss’ incredibly moving Four Last Songs and the monumental epic The Alpine Symphony, a work rarely attempted even by the world’s top professional orchestras. The final concert followed a four-day residential course at Wellington College, where the MTS boys had a chance to get to know similarly gifted students from other schools. The standard attained was exceptionally high, and a mostly-full Southbank Centre (including the Head Master and some governors) very much enjoyed the concluding performance. These joint school ventures are only every two years so, after this maiden voyage for MTS, we hope to be invited back for some Mahler in 2017!
