Careers Inspiration

160 very smart young men had their first chance to talk with and find out more about careers and opportunities from visiting professional guest speakers on 9th June. The boys rotated around representatives from a range of industries, quizzing them about their professions, where they may have started and where they are now; how careers can develop and some of the subjects and areas of Higher Education studied. The boys got to hear first-hand about the skills and qualities needed for employment and how important these are in industry, alongside studying subjects they find really interesting.

Through the support of our OMT Network and Parents we were able to offer insights into a wide range of professions: accountancy and finance; advertising; alternative energy; architecture; computer science and IT; consultancy in professional services; engineering; medicine; investment banking; film & TV production; law; linguistics; marketing; pharmacy; speech writing; sports consultancy; and event management. Teamwork, planning, design, logic and reasoning, listening, communication and presentation were just some of the skills the boys had chance to put into practice for the remainder of their day as they designed presentations in groups and then planned and built bridges which were tested with weights. The HS2 education team came in to deliver a workshop that challenged the boys to think creatively, compete for the most effective structures, and share their knowledge on career opportunities in the rail industry and technology.

Many thanks to all our parents, OMTs, parents of OMTs and friends of the school who supported this event: Alan Ferguson; Laura Armstrong; Julian Seabrook; Rajen Shah; Ged Loftus; Peter Hinson; Menaka Vettivetpillai; Jenny Wood; Anjli Shah; Nicky Heskin; Nilma Shah; Danny Goldman; Margaret Webster; James Booth; Dr Martin Sweatman and Karen Richards. And a very big thank you to the HS2 Team of Margaret Webster; Joanne Carr; Dominic Luddy; Mark Ellis.
