An Interview with Shami Chakrabarti

Shami Chakrabarti kindly agreed to be interviewed by Studio 72 before she gave her 'On-Liberty' talk at Merchant Taylors' School on 12th March. She is interviewed by Maneet Patel (Second Monitor) an Upper Sixth form pupil at Taylors', who is due to study Medicine at the University of Birmingham from September. Maneet has a keen interest in the arts and is a key member of the MTS Phab Team. The cameras were operated by Tom Bannon (5th Form).


Questions:
1. What prompted you to go into the field of human rights?
2. At Merchant Taylors' we have lots of students involved in different human rights societies, including amnesty international. Do you think human rights and the issues you support should be a more integrated part of the national curriculum?
3. What about the role social media plays; is it a blessing or a curse?
4. What are your thoughts on recent events that have been happening - for example, Je Suis Charlie?
5. Where do you see your career going from here? What if anything, would make you step down from your position?
6. You have been at Liberty for nearly 14 years now; how has the world and the issues you feel passionately about changed since you joined the organisation?
7. Would you step down to become a Member of Parliament?
8. Do you not feel that going into Parliament would allow you to have a bigger influence?
