Merchant Taylors' with St Helen's City Network
On Tuesday 20 September the Development Office held their 4th City Network event in conjunction with St Helen’s school, offering OMTs, Old Girls, parents and former parents working in the city the opportunity to connect with one another. Held at Deloitte’s UK headquarters in the heart of the city, the venue couldn’t have been more fitting.
Deepak Haria, MTS governor, parent at both schools and Partner at Deloitte warmly welcomed guests to the event. He introduced speakers Zoe Baines, Development Director of St Helen’s School, Simon Everson, and OMT Andrew Rose. Simon touched on the recent academic and sporting success of MTS before showing images of the developments within the school grounds that took place over the summer; most notably the removal of the 1970s false ceiling in the dining hall to reveal a grand vaulted ceiling. The former DT block underwent a complete overhaul and is now the history block, complete with flexible classroom spaces and dedicated library, and the Lun has now become a fully functioning coffee shop, which is proving very popular with the teachers and the boys.
Simon enthusiastically endorsed the online MTS careers directory. This tool enables OMTs to contact fellow alumni who work in a particular field or industry for careers advice and information. The service has proven to be extremely successful and a real benefit to our more recent leavers who can easily access the knowledge and experience of their predecessors as they make decisions about their own careers. We’re delighted that so many guests who attended the City Network have volunteered to be added to the directory, and also to return to school to give careers advice to the current boys.
Andrew Rose, OMT 1977 and CEO of the Global Infrastructure Investment Association, spoke about his fascinating career at the interface between the private and public sectors. His insights into the impact of Brexit and recent changes in the government on investment into the UK gave us all plenty to discuss over drinks and canapes. With lots of catching up to do and new people to meet, the evening was hugely enjoyed by all who attended.
Thanks so much to all who came along and making the event such a success, and enormous thanks to Deepak Haria who so generously hosted us at Deloitte.
