The Arts and Creative Industries Reception
The fourth ‘Arts and Creative Industries Reception’ was held on Thursday 11th May 2017. This was an opportunity for OMTs, St Helen’s Old Girls and parents of both schools to meet old friends and new at London’s Cartoon Museum.
This unique venue was the perfect setting for the evening. Political cartoonist Martin Rowson (Class of 1978 and trustee of the museum) spoke about his career and how it started. The encouragement and advice he received from his art teacher while a pupil at MTS he said “changed his life”. At school, Martin regularly drew posters for the debating society, and the odd satirical cartoon of his teachers too. When studying English Literature at Cambridge he says he spent most of his time drawing cartoons for the student newspapers, particularly Broadsheet. This gave birth to his cartoon drawing career, aged just 22.
An outlier in his field, it was a real privilege to hear Martin speak at this event. It set the tone for a wonderful evening, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.
